The Iowa Developmental Disabilities (DD) Council, Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation, and the Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE) want to celebrate Iowa businesses that proudly employ people with disabilities. Let’s raise awareness that every Iowan deserves the opportunity for employment in their community—and that our policies and laws should support this goal.

To help make this a reality, we’re inviting employers to host legislators at their workplaces to see employees with disabilities in action. Showcase the successes you and your team have accomplished together.

We will be sharing these success stories throughout National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October.

What is involved:

Host a 30–45 minute tour of your workplace, highlighting the contributions of employees with disabilities. It's also a great chance to showcase your business and the positive impact you're making.
Introduce the legislator to your employees.
Have the employee with a disability discuss their experience working in a job in the community.
Invite media and include pictures on your website and newsletters.

Please note this is intended to be a non-partisan event.

Getting Started

TO PARTICIPATE

Visit with your employees with disabilities to see if they want to invite their legislators to their workplace. If applicable, we may need permission from the guardian of the employee to take pictures.
Determine the best times to hold your visit. Select at least three dates and times to offer your legislator(s).

By submitting this form, both the employee and supervisor give permission to invite the employee’s legislator(s) to the specified workplace and understand that this employee will spend 30–45 minutes visiting with their legislator(s) during their shift.

The following activities will be allowed to take place:

Use of business name in media-related activities surrounding the campaign, including name of employee’s supervisor.

Media to be present during the visit.

Photos to be taken inside of business and used at discretion of the DD Council for media and/or promotional purposes.
